CLE (DJ SET)
Traditionally a DJ, playing at some of the most revered parties in Berlin in the early nineties like Planet, Tresor, WMF and E-Werk, Cle proved that presenting his interpretation of this music to an audience was something of a natural calling.
It was his first release then alongside close friend Steve Bug in ‘95, put together in a modest Hamburg bedroom that cemented his now inescapable affair with production, and indeed in time, with Poker Flat Recordings. All his releases on Poker Flat, alongside productions with his longterm music partner Mike Vamp, as Märtini Brös or with Steve Bug, all carry a distinctive tech funk sound which is a perfect mixture of old and new, a hybrid of years of experience, coupled with a constant playfulness and curiosity. As a real Poker Flat old hand he’s also host of the label’s own monthly podcast which is with the ever charming and eloquent at the helm definitely a not-to-be-missed slice of freshly-baked electronic music goodness!
Besides Cle is part of the legendary Washing Machine – an oldschool house party series which has been running in Berlin for over 10 years at different clubs including WMF, Horst, Soju Bar, Hafenbar, Cookies, Kater Holzig, Panorama Bar/Berghain, Watergate, Hamburg’s Pudel, and many more. It worships to Jack and to the house that Jack built and salutes to the oldschool, to the party and how it went down before there were beatports, ipods, handycams – when beats dropped from 2 mks and a mixer and the master of ceremony hyped up the crowd. When people who intended to have a drink or two ended up in a club screaming their hearts out for no other reason than the party. Behind the decks – of course – you will find the Berlin DJ legends Cle and Terrible, hosted by MC Daniel W. Best. Regular DJ guests are Dixon (Innervisions), who was also a founding member, Martin Landsky and Finn Johannsen.
But that‘s not all. Cle is involved in manifold projects. For instance, djing as a classical DJ for Yellow Lounge or together with DJ Eva Be in a brand new project called LoYoTo. Both built up a studio together and during their legendary back2back DJ sets, they finally united their different musical backgrounds – dub/reggae and underground house music – and defined their very own sound.
